About eCommDirect
eCommDirect is an online program provided by the TDCJ Commissary and Trust Fund Department for eligible inmates that allow approved family members and friends of inmates to make an online deposit into an inmate’s inmate trust fund account or both and make online purchases. Family members and friends of eligible inmates can make online purchases up to the maximum quarterly spend. The Inmate spends depend on the following months:
- January – March up to $70.00.
- April – June up to $70.00.
- July – September up to $70.00.
- October – December up to $95.00 (Holiday Spend)
Apparently, there are up to one hundred of the top selling items available for purchase through eCommDirect. Those items include:
- Snacks
- Hygiene products
- Correspondence supplies
- Some new packaged items
Need to note that online amount purchased will not affect the amount that can be spent by the inmates on commissary items from funds deposited in their inmate trust fund account. As we explained before, eCommDirect is only offered by the TDCJ Commissary and Trust Fund Department for eligible inmates. Thus, not all inmates can enjoy this online program.
Here are inmates who are not eligible to get commissary purchases through this online program:
- Inmates on commissary restriction.
- Inmates housed in General Population and State Jail (levels 4 and 5).
- Inmates in Administrative Segregation levels 2, 3 and transition.
- Inmates in Death Row levels 2 and 3.
- Inmates in certain medical conditions.

TDCJ eCommDirect department allows friends and family members of inmates to make an online deposit to an inmate’s inmate trust fund account and an online merchandise purchase. Usually, within five business days after TDCJ receives the purchase transaction details from Texas.gov, the online merchandise purchase will be delivered to the inmate. Remember that unit security or staffing problems will be able to override this timeframe. The online deposit will be transferred to the inmate’s trust fund account on the second business day from the day where family members or friends of the inmate make the online deposit. If the item is unavailable at the time of distribution, then online purchase can be changed.
