Where do I have to park my commercial vehicle overnight? This question may come to you when you drive your commercial vehicle for the first time and then you have to take the vehicle with you. A commercial vehicle can be defined as any vehicle which is used to run business, for example a garbage truck, a hearse, a delivery truck, a bus and many more.
In the United States, you cannot park your commercial vehicle as you want. There are rules for it and every state may have different rules.
The Rules of Parking a Commercial Vehicle in Several States
You are not permitted to park your commercial vehicle in a residential area. It is because this area is for people to reside and people can only park there for residential parking purposes only as explained on the Fair Punishment site. It means that a commercial vehicle is not permitted to park there. Another reason is for safety. What does it mean? Let’s say that you park your garbage truck in a residential area. If you do that, there may be a risk that emergency vehicles or emergency procedures may be obstructed by the vehicle which is obstructing the way. A bigger vehicle can also hinder the visibility of drivers and emergency vehicles.
In Los Angeles, a commercial vehicle which is longer than 22 feet is prohibited to park in a residential area. In Nevada, a commercial vehicle is prevented from parking overnight in a residential area for any reason. In New York City, people are not permitted to park their commercial vehicles overnight under any circumstances between 9 pm to 5 am. However, New York allows a commercial vehicle to park for commercial activity between 9 pm to 5 am, but it must be within 3 blocks of the area of parking. In Miami, Florida, 2 commercial vehicles of category 1 such as limousines, taxi cabs, and a vehicle with advertising, are permitted to park outside a residence. However, vehicles of category 3 such as dump trucks or trailers, are not permitted to park in residential areas.
In most states, there is an exception where a commercial vehicle is permitted to park in a residential area, namely when it is for work purposes such as delivering goods, collecting garbage, emergency situations, etc.
