Who doesn’t know Spencer Reid? Yeah, “Criminal Minds” fans would be familiar with the name. A brilliant profiler and agent of the Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) of the FBI has really attracted millions of fans, making him the most favorite character in the series.
In season 12, however, Spencer Reid, portrayed by Matthew Gray Gubler, shocked the fans. In one of the series’ scenes, Reid was sent to prison after being arrested in a Mexican motel room. If you haven’t yet watched this Criminal Minds series, you may also get confused about why a virtuous main character should be imprisoned.
Thankfully! We’ll show you chronologically why Spencer Reid went to jail!
Why Was Spencer Reid Sent to Jail?
Spencer Reid was imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Actually, Reid was imprisoned for the murder of a woman named Nadie Ramos, whom he met in Mexico in an attempt to find Alzheimer’s medicine for his mother. Ramos posed as a doctor specializing in Alzheimer’s disease under the name Rosa Medina.
Chronologically, Reid was in a Mexican motel room and suddenly woke up confused when police arrested him. Around him, he saw a bag of drugs and the dead body of Nadie Ramos. When asked for information by the police, he couldn’t remember anything, so he was sent to prison.
Reid was then extradited to the United States and should face trial and prison time. Unluckily, the FBI didn’t provide him with legal assistance since he violated the protocol by going to Mexico without informing them. What’s worse, he couldn’t remember clearly what really happened on the day of the murder because he was drugged and manipulated by someone.
Fortunately, the BAU team nimbly worked to prove that Reid was not found guilty by searching for who was behind the case. Finally, they could provide proof that Reid was innocent, and he was ultimately released from prison.
Who Was Behind the Trap Against Spencer Reid?
In an effort to find the real murderer of Nadie Ramos, the BAU team initially suspected Peter Lewis, also known as Mr. Scratch, who was once involved in a case where he targeted the BAU and was found to use drugs to create false memories. However, they didn’t find proof that Peter Lewis got involved in this case.
They later discovered another suspect, i.e., Cat Adams, a former assassin and Reid’s nemesis. It was known that Cat Adams is a notorious hitwoman who has been brainwashed by Peter Lewis since childhood. She was once arrested by Reid himself and Lindsey Vaughn, who is part of the national drug cartel. Cat had successfully escaped from prison with the help of Lindsey Vaughn.
Finally, the fact was discovered that Cat Adams and Lindsey Vaughn have set the entire thing up in Mexico to trap Spencer Reid using Nadie Ramos as a pawn where they also stabbed her to death. They also sprayed him with a hallucinogenic substance. Additionally, they also kidnapped Reid’s mother to use her as a guarantee to make him admit to the murder.
With the help of Emily Prentiss, who posed as Reid’s lawyer, the BAU team finally uncovered the duo’s bad plans and managed to rescue Diana from Lindsey. Diana Reid also recognized that Lindsey was her former nurse. Reid could confront Cat and Lindsey in a standoff by outsmarting them. Finally, Reid was cleared of all charges and was released from prison after spending several months in prison.
Why Did Spencer Reid Travel to Mexico Without Informing the FBI?
Spencer Reid traveled to Mexico with great reason as the child of a mother suffering from schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. Reid’s mother, Diana Reid, who was portrayed by Jane Lynch, should live in a mental health institution.
Seeing his mother’s condition, Reid was devastated. Not only did he have to watch over his mother due to schizophrenia, but he also had to continue to restore his mother’s memories, which were slowly disappearing.
Meanwhile, Reid received information that there was research on Alzheimer’s in Houston, Texas. Without thinking, he visited Texas to see what the research was all about. However, the treatment in the study did not last long and did not seem to work.
In Texas, he met Rosa Medina, an Alzheimer’s specialist who was known to have written various papers on the disease, and Reid had read them. Reid eventually learns that Rosa Media lives in Mexico. He didn’t stay silent. Finally, he went to Mexico to find out where Medina lived.
It is known that he went to and from Mexico three times without notifying the FBI since he thought that it was a personal interest and he didn’t want his mother’s condition and illness to be known to many people.
