Legal DNA Testing at Labcorp

Labcorp provides legal DNA testing and here are the steps.

  • First, you need to choose the appropriate DNA test and buy the test.
  • And then, you will have to schedule an appointment. It is important for you to note that there are special collection requirements for legal DNA tests where these are designed to provide confidence in the legal setting that the samples were gathered from the correct people and it also makes sure that there is no disturbance during the process of sample collection and shipment to the laboratory.
  • Then, the samples will have to be shipped to the lab after the DNA samples have been collected. The samples will be shipped in a tamper-evident shipping envelope.
  • If the laboratory has received the sample, then it will be tested and reviewed twice.
  • If the test is done, the results will be sent through express shipper, USPS, or email and usually it is available within 3 to 5 business days for routine paternity cases.

Besides legal DNA tests, Labcorp also offers at-home DNA tests where the steps are almost the same, but for at-home DNA tests, there are no special collection requirements and the samples can be collected in your home.

When DNA testing, you may wonder whether you must have an order from a doctor or not. In general, a DNA testing order from a doctor is not required, but in compliance with New York State law, Labcorp needs court order, a prescription, or ordering by other authorized people for all DNA identity or relationship tests which are performed on a New York resident.

Reading Labcorp DNA Test Results

After a DNA test has been performed and you get the results from Labcorp, you may be confused to read the results. The report may look confusing for you because there are some tables with numbers and letters in it.

Well, actually reading the DNA result is easy. It may be complicated for you to understand the information in the tables, moreover if you are not a practitioner in healthcare. So, you just have to read the conclusion section under the table. There, usually there is the explanation about the conclusion of the DNA test. In that section, for example for the paternity test, it will be explained whether the alleged father is the biological father of the child or not. Besides, there is also the information of probability of paternity that will be shown there. As explained on the Labcorp site that the result usually provides a probability of paternity of either 0.00% or 99.99% or greater. However, if you want to understand more or need more explanation about the result, and you also want to understand what it is in the tables, then you are able to consult with a healthcare professional.
